John Allen Nelson

Baritone John Allen Nelson is rapidly establishing himself as a compelling artist with a “deliciously hearty sound” and “uniformity from top to bottom.” This summer, he will debut as Germont in Verdi’s La Traviata with the Bar Harbor Music Festival. This follows a dynamic season in Houston, where he portrayed the French Sentry in Houston Grand Opera’s Silent Night. An advocate for contemporary opera, he was also featured in the title role of the world premiere of Hobson’s Choice at the Moores Opera Center, and he previously originated the role of Fighter Pilot in the world premiere of Grounded with Washington National Opera.

Recent engagements include Enrico in Lucia di Lammermoor (Opera in the Heights), Senator Norton in Frederick Douglass (Odyssey Opera), Ping in Turandot (Moores Opera Center), Marcello in La Bohème (Northern Lights Music Festival), Schaunard in La Bohème (Pacific Symphony), and Marullo in Rigoletto (Pacific Symphony). Mr. Nelson also maintains a reputation for reliable “jump-in” performances, including of the title role in Don Giovanni with West Bay Opera. He has also appeared with Opera Colorado, Boston Lyric Opera, Des Moines Metro Opera, New York City Opera, Utah Opera, Minnesota Opera, the Pacific Symphony, the Spoleto Festival, and more.

On the concert stage, Mr. Nelson has appeared as a soloist at Carnegie Hall, performing works by Schubert, Mozart, and Vivaldi. A Minnesota native, he holds degrees from Boston University, UMKC, and St. John’s University. He is currently pursuing a DMA at the University of Houston.
