Baritone Jeff Mattsey is known worldwide for the signature baritone roles that have defined his prominent career. A house favorite and veteran of over 180 performances at the Metropolitan Opera, he made his company debut in their production of Les contes d’Hoffmann, and returned as Marco in Gianni Schicchi, Mercutio and Paris in Roméo et Juliette, Guglielmo in Così fan tutte, Silvano in Un ballo in Maschera, Schaunard in La bohème, Hermann/Schlémil Les contes d’Hoffmann, Marullo in Rigoletto, and Montano in Otello. Additional productions include Doctor Atomic, Die Zauberflöte, Il barbiere di Siviglia, Andrea Chénier, Carmen, La traviata, Billy Budd, L’elisir d’amore, Die   Fledermaus, The Merry Widow, The Exterminating Angel, Così fan tutte, Roméo et Juliette, La Fanciulla del West, Gianni Schicchi, Otello, and La Traviata. received outstanding reviews for the title role of Sweeney Todd with Opera Idaho and made a  company critically lauded debut with Anchorage Opera in Huang Ruo’s Bound. Other roles:  Uncle John in The Grapes of Wrath with Michigan Opera Theatre, Aldred Doolittle in My Fair  Lady: In Concert with Utah Symphony, Mayor Shinn in The Music Man: In Concert with  Pacific Symphony, and Pere Germont in La Traviata with the Northern Lights Music Festival.  

Known for his “vocal and visual swagger” (Pittsburgh Post Gazette), Mr. Mattsey made his  operatic stage debut at the age of 21 as Marcello opposite Luciano Pavarotti in the Opera  Company of Philadelphia production of La Boheme. Since that time, the baritone has  appeared with such companies as New York City Opera, Vancouver Opera, Boston Lyric  Opera, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Houston Grand Opera, San Diego Opera, and Opera di Genova among many others. Career highlights include the US premiere of Thomas Adès’ The  Exterminating Angel, the world premiere of Stewart Copeland’s Holy Blood and Crescent  Moon, and a GRAMMY® Nomination for the Monteverdi Vespers of 1610 with Martin  Perlman and Boston Baroque. Jeff Mattsey is also co-author and performer of Baritones  Unbound at ArtsEmerson, Asolo Theatre, Royal George Theatre, and has been program  director for Perform Opera in Italy since 2023.
