Cristina Maria Castro

A San Antonio, Texas native deeply connected to her Puerto Rican roots, Cristina María Castro is a sought-after performer equally at home in classical music and musical theatre. During the 2025/26 season, she makes her Opera in the Heights debut reprising the role of Sunny in Laura Kaminsky’s Lucidity, and her Carnegie Hall debut as the soprano soloist in Mozart’s Coronation Mass and Forrest’s Requiem for the Living with MidAmerica Productions.

Castro enjoyed a diverse 2024/2025 season, appearing as Maria in West Side Story in her Indianapolis Opera debut, Johanna in Sweeney Todd with Opera Montana, Frasquita in Carmen in her St. Petersburg Opera debut, and as Susanna in Le nozze di Figaro with Northern Lights Music Festival. She also originated and premiered the role of Sunny in Lucidity with On Site Opera and Seattle Opera.

An avid champion of new music, Castro has had the honor of originating several other roles, including Mrs. D in Howie D: Back in the Day, Cristina María in Local Opera Local Artists’ opera pastiche We Might Be Struck by Lightning, Catherine in the New York Theatre Festival musical Bright Is the Ring of Words, and Guan Yin in Monkey: A Kung Fu Puppet Parable with White Snake Projects. She has also participated in workshops through Fort Worth Opera’s Frontiers program and helped pioneer the genre of choral theatre as La Decimista in El Oratorio Panhispánico with Music at Co-Cathedral (MACC).

Additional favorite performances include Toledo in The Falling and the Rising, Monica in Fort Worth Opera’s reimagined La Médium, Aldonza in Man of La Mancha, Despina in Così fan tutte, and appearances with Chautauqua Opera, Utah Festival Opera, and City Lyric Opera.
