Abby Powell | mezzo-soprano
Abby Powell is an acclaimed mezzo-soprano celebrated for her rich tone, expressive artistry, and commanding stage presence. A native of Ohio, she earned her degree in voice from The Juilliard School in New York City, where she was honored with the Rise Stevens Award, the G. & M. Grunin Prize, and the Loretta Lewis Award in Voice.
Ms. Powell made her operatic debut as Zita in Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi, followed by performances as Ma Moss in Aaron Copland’s The Tender Land at both the Aspen Opera Theater and The Juilliard Workshop. Her return to the Aspen Summer Music Festival brought widespread acclaim with her performance of Brahms’ Zwei Gesänge für Alt und Viola, Op. 91 alongside violist Masao Kawasaki and pianist Orli Shaham—an appearance that led to invitations to perform abroad in Taiwan and throughout New York.
She has performed under the baton of renowned conductors including James Conlon, Julius Rudel, Harry Bickett, Steven Osgood, Miguel Harth-Bedoya, Neal Goren and Patrick Summers.
Her extensive repertoire includes Juno (Semele, John Eccles), Dido and The Sorceress (Dido and Aeneas, Purcell), Mère Marie (Dialogues des Carmélites, Poulenc), Lyubasha (The Tsar’s Bride, Rimsky-Korsakov), Marcellina (Le Nozze di Figaro, Mozart), Charlotte (Werther, Massenet), Brangäne (Tristan und Isolde, Wagner), and the title role in Bizet’s Carmen, among many others.
With a voice praised for its warmth, depth, and lyrical power, Abby Powell continues to captivate audiences and critics alike on stages across the United States and beyond.
