Anthony Brandt & Neena Beber: Kassandra

The scientist who rejects a powerful man, her gift of prophecy, and her curse of not being believed.

Based on the Greek myth of Cassandra and Apollo, Kassandra is a new opera with words by Neena Beber and music by Anthony Brandt, who serves as composition professor at Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music and artistic director of MUSIQA.

In this modern retelling of the classical myth, Kassandra is a climate scientist, who unearths troubling findings. When her colleague, Apollo, attempts to seduce her she spurns his advances. Subsequently, Apollo undermines her career, ensuring that her research is met only with skepticism.

Karin Al-Zand & Eugène Ionesco: The Leader

The followers who await, the leader who approaches, and his much-anticipated arrival that no one saw coming.

Based on Eugène Ionesco’s one-act satirical play of the same name, The Leader is a new opera by Karim Al-Zand, who serves as composition professor at Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music and founding artistic board member of MUSIQA.

In a public square, an “announcer” and two admirers eagerly narrate the actions of a “great man” who approaches, anticipating the leader’s arrival. Separately, two young lovers declare their mutual affection but are eventually swept up by the increasingly bizarre worship of the leader.
